ROBERT Ungar's new boat is bigger than my house. And it's more expensive and it's got more bedrooms.
Welcome aboard the good ship R and R - Mr Ungar's latest sea-going toy. And what a mighty plaything she is. An overall length of 23m, five double cabins, four stone-lined bathrooms and a modern stainless steel galley with marble bench-tops my missus would kill for. There's a five-zone stereo system (Bose, of course) and no fewer than eight flat screen TVs with DVD and Foxtel access. If you fancy a drink, there's a big fridge, a back-up big fridge, numerous bar fridges and a cold storage unit on the foredeck that holds exactly four slabs.
The vessel with the $6 million price tag was made at Plymouth in England. It's got to be the coolest pad going. "Effectively she is a luxury apartment," the skipper said. "Like a moving, well-fitted lounge room you can take from place to place." The interior decor gets a big tick, and then some, for "wow" factor.
The vessel is powered by two 1622 horse power Caterpillar diesels. "Yes, the same sort of engines they put in bull dozers," Mr Ungar said. She can cruise long range on the high seas with those aboard in the utmost comfort. That is, if you can afford the fuel bill. At cruising speed, 23 knots, she uses 350 litres of diesel fuel an hour.
It costs about $30,000 to top her up for a trip to Hamilton Island, where she'll be going in the autumn. In the interim the R and R remains berthed at Queenscliff Marina. "The facilities here are very impressive and the service is excellent," Mr Ungar said.
He said this was his 12th boat, each one larger than the one before. But is this the last vessel he intends to buy?
